The Kanye West Incident
When Taylor Swift won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards show she responded to Kanye West taking credit for her success in his song “Famous” with a cool and calm reaction reminding us of the first time she chose to respond to Kanye’s outbursts in Innocent fashion.
The Innocent Archetype’s Cool Reaction to Conflict
Award shows usually have some kind of shock factor. We’re surprised by who took the most awards through the night or we’re amazed that a song we didn’t like was nominated at all but Kanye West’s outburst at the 2009 VMAs is still one of the most memorable award show blows to this day.
The Radio City Music Hall was packed as usual on the night of the 2009 VMAs and the Best Female Video of the Year winner was tough to predict with artists like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Pink, and Taylor Swift all nominated.
Even with all of that competition Taylor Swift won. As she accepted her Moonman Award with joy and surprise like that of a child she began her acceptance speech with “Thank you so much! I’ve always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these someday…”
She said a few more words about how grateful she was to even be considered and by the time the cameras captured Pink’s delighted reaction at Taylor’s win Kanye West was on stage, mic in hand stealing this once in a lifetime moment from Swift shouting “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”
Beyoncé was mortified, Taylor Swift was stunned, the audience booed, and her time was up. Moment done.
Cool, Calm & Collected
What sets Taylor apart from other Archetypes, especially in this situation, is her ability to remain positive in really tough situations. She didn’t make a scene on stage and she didn’t start any conflict off stage when the reporters asked her questions like “how do you feel about Kanye now?” and whether or not she was still a fan.
She stayed cool, calm, and collected. She told viewers that it was an “interesting night” and that she didn’t know Kanye West so she wasn’t about to make any statements about how she felt about him now. Her responses were filled with gratitude about how great the night was and how honored and happy she was to have been part it.
In Innocent fashion Taylor took a potentially devastating situation and shrugged it off with gratitude at the overall positive elements of the award winning experience.
The Most Optimistic Person in the Room
Innocent’s like Taylor Swift wish they could inject the whole world with good but they know that’s not a realistic feat so instead they live in their own world guided by positivity, gratitude, faith and kindness and lead others by example.
As an Innocent Archetype Taylor Swift approaches life with a sense of wonder, playfulness and optimism mirrored by very few. You see it in her performances on and off stage, you find it in her music, you see it as she manages public conflict and through every one of her philanthropic endeavors (like her ALS Ice Bucket Challenge).
If you’re an Innocent Archetype like Taylor Swift and you’re in a frustrating or conflict-ridden situation you’re likely to be the one who takes a breath and counts to 10 or in Swifts case you might just smile at the camera and shake it off!
